6 Best Tools to Open a Watch Case

Opening a watch case can be difficult sometimes, especially for someone who is new to watches and just want to replace its battery. Even for a watch specialist, opening a watch without leaving any scratch is even harder, with most of our designer’s watch brands using reflective, polished mirror like case back. A fitted tool for your watch essential if you want to open your watch with ease.

My name is Steve from watchdepots.com.au, today I will be telling you about 6 awesome tools you can use to open your watch without leaving any scratches. Depending on different types of cases, the tool can be different. Please let me assure you that with all my tools, opening any types of watches will be a piece of cake.

1.Pin pen for the watch bands.

Most of the steel and some leather watches have two bracelet/bands linked by clasp, it will get in the way when you try to open the case. The easiest way to break it is to take the spring bar off the first link/piece that connects the band to the clasp, as shown in picture
1. Most of the watches they use spring bar to link those two pieces just so that it can be taken out easily.

2. Rubber Ball

For screw-in cases, the easy tool to open is the rubber ball. Those cute looking balls are easy to grasp. Just make sure your press it firmly against the back of the case and turn anti clock wise to loosen and clock wise to tighten the case.

This is the best tool I found so far, but only apply for screw-in cases.

3. Two end case opener

Those case openers are really great if your watch is less than 40mm in diameter. The tip is make sure you fit the teeth in position first and tightens it. Otherwise the teeth may slip out and scratch the watch cases around those dents.

4. Large Tri-hand case opener

The large screw in case opener is greater to open all sizes of cases. It has three feet and four sets of teeth for different types of cases. The largest cases it can open is about 50mm, I personally haven’t had any luck opening such large watch so far. Comparing to two end screw-in opener, this one is more stable as in its teeth normally will not slip out of the dents, especially if you use the three teeth.

You do not need to apply too much strength when using this tool, just make sure you press down evenly at the three feet to make sure they are in position.

5. Blades and hammer

Blade hammer

The non-screw in case is very difficult to open without scratching it for a watch newbie. Generally people tend to use a small screw driver to gouge open the case and they either scratch the watch bezel or the case. I found the best thing to use is a section of the blade shown in the picture.

You need to position the blade at 3 oclock point of the watch and make sure it is angled about parallel to the watch mirror. Remember we are trying to gouge open the case not to dig into the case, so the angel is very important. Try to make the blade as parallel to the glass as possible and fit it into the crack. Hold it with on hand and use the other hand to hammer the back of the blade gently. After few times, you will see the case is lifted a little and you can start gouging with blade until it is completely off.

Just make sure you do not hammer the blade too heavily in case of damaging the watch case or hurting yourself.

6. Mini Case Compressor

For all the watches with a press-in case back, you will need some compressor to press the case back into your watch. There is no need for any fancy compressors; this mini compressor is really great for the job. It comes with all the pieces needed for any size of watches. You can get this one for $14.95 including delivery.

Just make sure you always choose a cushion (the button piece that sits beneath the watch glass) that is bigger than the watch glass, so when you press the level down, you will not crush your watch glass.

Hope you enjoyed my tips and pictures so far. If your watch case is extremely hard to open and it is not covered in this article, pls let me know and I will definitely look into it. Every watch lovers should be able to check their beloved watch movement, change its battery without scratching it!! :)
